Your New Puppy - Birth to Year One

Whether your puppy came from a top breeder, the Humane Society, or a cardboard box, there are ceratin things that every new puppy needs. The list below outlines these essentials. However, every breed of dog is different and has its own special needs. Talk to your veterinarian about any specific health concerns that may affect your breed of puppy.

First Visit (at 6 to 8 weeks of age)

  • Examination by a Veterinarian
  • DHPP Vaccination (Distemper, Hepatitis/Adenoviris, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus
  • Puppy is weighed and dewormed for intestinal parasites
  • Heartworm and Flea prevention is started

Second Visit (at 9 to 10 weeks of age)

  • DHLPP vaccine booster
  • Puppy is weighed and dewormed
  • Heartworm and flea prevention dispensed

Third Visit (at 12 to 14 weeks old)

  • Examination by Veterinarian
  • DHLPP booster and rabies vaccination
  • Microscopic fecal exam for intestinal parasite eggs (puppy is dewormed only if eggs are seen)
  • Heartworm and flea prevention is prescribed per puppy's current weight and expected growth
  • Puppy is old enough to spay or neuter (recommended if not intending to breed)

Your Adult Dog - Year One to Year Six

It is important during these formative years that special care is taken to ensure your dog is receiving the proper care. Whether your pet is indoors or outdoors, active or sedentary, small or large, your veterinarian can help you determine what is best for your dog's lifestyle.

  • Annual Health Exam with Veterinarian
  • Rabies and DHLPP booster (at one year, then every three years)
  • Annual fecal exam
  • Heartworm test (recommended annually)
  • Weight monitoring
  • Heartworm and flea prevention

Your Senior Dog - Year Seven and Up

As your dog gets older, items such as proper diet and weight control become even more important. Talk to your veterinarian about how you can help provide for your dog the highest quality life into his golden years and beyond.

  • Annual or semi-annual health exam (recommended every six months)
  • DHLPP and rabies booster (every three years)
  • Annual fecal exam
  • Annual heartworm test
  • Blood drawn for Senior Internal Health Profile (recommended annually)
  • Weight monitoring
  • Heartworm and flea prevention
  • Urinalysis
